SHE READY was a vision cast by Tamisha Torres-Walker, co-founder and Executive Director of the Safe Return Project, in 2019 after many years
of reflecting on her own experience as a leader and contemplating running for political office. She found herself often discouraged and

overwhelmed by the idea of entering into a space that seemed to be outside her radical values related to justice and equity.

She took her concerns to Jess Jollett, then Director of Lift Up Contra Costa, and together, they reached out to women in leadership at the
political and grassroots levels to invite them to our very first She Ready event in January 2020. The event was designed to inspire women like
herself who needed encouragement to step outside of their comfort zone and take their leadership to the next level.

History of SHE READY

Following the event, Tamisha and other women of color joined Lift Up Contra Costa's first leadership cohort and ran for office that same year. Their victories were not just personal triumphs but also a source of pride and inspiration for other women, encouraging them to become major players in movements for racial equity across the County of Contra Costa over the past four years.
